Tuttosport has announced the names of the 40 applicants for the Golden Boy award. The Spanish, Ansu Fati and Ferran Torres, candidates for the Golden Boy award that chooses the best player in the Under-21 category of the year. They also choose Alphonso Davies, a Bayern Munich player; Erling Haaland, Borussia Dortmund player or Rodrygo Goes and Vinicius Junior, from Real Madrid.
The Italian newspaper has been granting this award since 2003. On October 15, Tuttosport will announce the final list with only 20 candidates from which the best Under-21 footballer of the year will be chosen. A jury made up of 40 European sports journalists will choose the winner. The ceremony will take place in Turin in December. In this edition, only two Spanish players have managed to sneak into the complex list of 40 candidates.
Ansu Fati and Ferran Torres, candidates for the Golden Boy award
The Barcelona player, Ansu Fati, just 17 years old, is a promising young player in Spanish football and is one of those chosen to become the best Under-21 footballer. The Hispano-Guinean made his debut just a few weeks ago with the Spanish team against Ukraine where he scored a goal. Fati holds the title of youngest scorer in the history of the National Team.
Manchester City midfielder Ferran Torres is the other Spanish player with a chance of winning the award. The 20-year-old former Valencia player signed for the English team led by Pep Guardiola this summer.
One of the candidates who sound strong to rise as the best Under-21 footballer is Alphonso Davies. The Bayern Munich player is considered one of the best left-backs in the world. The Canadian, only 19 years old, has been one of the key pieces of the German club to get the treble, Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League.
Norwegian Erling Haaland could also win the award. The Borussia Dortmund player and former Salzburg player has scored 44 goals throughout the season. The forward has had a great season in the Bundesliga and the 44 goals scored could be decisive to make him the winner of the trophy. Among the candidates are Brazilian players from Real Madrid, Rodrygo Goes and Vinicius Junior. Or the Stade Rennais Football Club player, Eduardo Camavinga.
The best Under-21 footballer of last season was the Atlético de Madrid player, João Félix. Tuttosport , the Italian newspaper has been granting this award since 2003. The Dutch Rafael Van der Vaart, the English Wayne Rooney, the Spanish Cesc Fábregas and Isco Alarcón, the French Kylian Mbappé or the Argentine Lionel Messi, have this award in their record.
